About the role: OPTECH/M I (UTILITY) performs routine duties for which qualified in connection with the operation of equipment, installation, removal, replacement, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment associated with hydroelectric generation and transformation in accordance with safety, regulations and practices; effectively assists higher rated employees in the performance of such duties; instructs and effectively directs other employees in the performance of any duties for which qualified; performs work of a lower classification; and performs other work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:The following minimum qualifications must be met in order to obtain and retain this classification:
- Knowledge and Skills: Ability to meet job knowledge and skill requirements will be determined by company interviews and tests. Must be able to safely and satisfactorily perform all the duties of lower classifications. Must satisfactorily complete 175 hours in all of the shift operator jobs to obtain this classification.
- Safety: Must demonstrate knowledge of safe work methods and practices, fire protection and accident prev1mtion. Ability to perform assigned work in a safe manner in accordance with the rules and regulations applicable to power stations.
- Physical: Ability to perform heavy physical work, climb structures, and work in high places. Mechanical aptitude for power station work.
- Mental: Mental ability to learn and perform the duties of maintenance classifications.
- Clerical: Ability to prepare legible and accurate reports.
- Work: Characteristics: Meet company standards in regard to physical fitness, personal conduct and appearance, attendance, work performance, safety practices, and supervision required.
- Special: Posses a valid motor vehicle operators license and be able to safely operate motor vehicles. Must have demonstrated a genuine interest in learning through individual and cooperative efforts the job requirements of this classification. Successfully train and qualify for all operating classification and satisfactorily complete 175 hours in operating assignments. Know the name, purpose, capacity, proper care, selection and use of tools, materials and instruments commonly used in power station maintenance work. Demonstrate ability to tie simple rope hitches and use machine and portable power tools and equipment. Demonstrate knowledge of simple electric circuits.
- Perform all duties of lower classifications.
- Receive instructions and training in and qualify for all operating classifications.
- Fill operating vacancies as required.
- Effectively assist higher rated employees in the performance of their duties.
- Aid in dismantling all station equipment such as pumps, hoists, breakers, transformers, etc.
- Clean various parts in dismantling equipment.
- Blow out motors, generators, and exciters. Lean and lubricate equipment such as drill presses, pipe threaders, hoists, governors, turbines, etc.
- Report improper equipment operation.
- Change lamps throughout the plant.
- Perform simple rigging jobs required in the maintenance of the station equipment. Tie simple rope hitches and install scaffold or platforms. Operate hoists safely and effectively.
- Perform cleaning and painting work, as assigned.
- Prepare legible and accurate reports.
- Demonstrate b1owledge of the name, purpose, capacity, proper care, selection and use of tools, materials and instruments commonly used in power station maintenance work.
- Help repack valves on low pressure piping.
- Assist in making megger tests of electrical equipment.
- Help maintain auxiliary circuit breakers including cleaning external surfaces, checking and replacing, if needed, main and arching contacts; checking setting and aligning the contacts; dismantling, cleaning, assembling and adjusting the mechanism; assembling and adjusting the linkage; checking and adjusting the pallet switch.
- Help install switchboards, bus systems, conduit systems, and bare and insulated wiring jobs including disconnect switches, copper tubing, light fixtures and other electrical devices.
- Help inspect & repair neutral resisters including identifying grouping of cards, identifying taps; sketching groupings and tap; dismantling; cleaning contact surfaces; replacing insulators as necessary; and reassembling and checking.
- Drill, punch, and tack weld and erect simple steel structures.
- Act as safetyman for men working close to energized equipment. Be alert and vigilant, know the safe area on each job as outlined by man in charge, and know safety rules in regard to equipment to be used such as belts, ladders, ropes, etc., after instructions.
- Inspect and discharge fire extinguishers. Demonstrate knowledge of the correct fire extinguisher to use on electrical fires.
- Install steel lagging on casing. Replace floor plates and grating.
