About the role: The Director of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) will be responsible for leading and managing the company's EH&S program. This includes ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, promoting a culture of safety and environmental stewardship, and developing proactive strategies to mitigate risks associated with ECRE operations. This role demands a visionary leader dedicated to continuous improvement and sustainability.

About ECRE: Eagle Creek, through its affiliate companies, owns and operates 86 hydroelectric facilities in the United States. Our mission is to create value for our stakeholders - including the communities where we operate - through an ongoing commitment to safety, compliance, stewardship, innovation, and growth for our portfolio of renewable energy generating facilities. Reporting directly to the Chief Compliance Officer, the Director of EH&S will be responsible for the duties outlined below.

This position is to be based out of Eagle Creek's headquarters in Bethesda MD, or our office in Badin, NC. Applicants located out of state must be open to relocation if offered the position. 

What you’ll do:
  • Develop, implement, and oversee EH&S policies, procedures, and programs tailored to hydropower operations.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental laws, safety standards, and industry best practices, including OSHA, EPA, and FERC requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments and audits to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Lead incident investigations and develop preventive measures to reduce recurrence.
  • Drive safety training programs and environmental education initiatives for all employees and contractors.
  • Partner with operational teams to ensure safe and sustainable practices in hydropower generation, maintenance, and facility upgrades.
  • Oversee permitting processes related to environmental impact and water usage, ensuring adherence to all regulatory requirements.
  • Lead monthly standing meetings regarding safety performance for all of our operations divisions.
  • Monitor and manage EH&S metrics, reporting regularly to executive leadership on performance and improvements.
  • Foster collaboration across departments to integrate EH&S principles into every aspect of the organization’s operations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, community stakeholders, and industry groups on EH&S matters.
What skills & experience you’ll need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field (Master's preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience working in EH&S policy management, preferably within the energy or hydropower sector.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and FERC standards.
  • Proven leadership skills, with a track record of driving cultural change and operational improvements.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) are highly desirable.
Working Conditions:
  • Combination of office and field work at ECRE facilities.
  • Travel required for site visits and meetings.
  • Role may involve exposure to outdoor environments and operational equipment.
